Hi,

What you’re doing with this website is great in that you’re so open about the whole process. Designing and building one’s own home is all very exciting, and most of us only dream of doing it. I wish you the best of luck.

My previous house had a step in the middle of the main floor (previous owners renovated it that way for some reason), and everyone kept tripping over it, especially since it was between the kitchen and dining room. (It was also a problem for my blind cat.)

I like how you’ve excavated under your garage.

Eric.

This house looks great. Seems to flow well and seems even child friendly. Now for the suggestions…the garage needs some natural light, either windows in the garage doors or north wall, unless you like caves. It doesn’t seem the master has enough receptacles. I know my bedside could use double between the alarm clock, lamp, blackberry, cordless phone, ipod etc.. Don’t know if your a Christmas light guy or not but a receptacle out front in the fascia is is pretty handy. How about a natural gas BBQ hook up on the deck and hose bibs in the garage and the west side exterior. As well I would think of a ceiling fan in your clearstory, with all those windows it will get incredibly hot up there, and with that heat and moisture it’s a recipe for paint bubble and drywall tape peel. As for the deck you might want to do a step down to a ground level patio. Two reasons, you’re not peering over your fence into the neighbors yard and when/if you have kids they dont’t fall/crawl off of it. Seems like your going with radiant floor heating, so you might want a HRV (they could be even code now) just so you get your fresh air in the home. Concrete breathes, but not that much. As well I would do tile in the kitchen area just for durability sake. Dropping knives, pots and eggs aren’t good for hardwood.

Good Luck. All the best.

Thanks for creating this site and sharing the information. It’s very helpful. It would be even greater if you could share some dollar figures on things, an approximation of the expenses, how much things were budgeted and how much they end up costing. Having said that it is totally understandable if you or your suppliers/contractors don’t feel comfortable in disclosing that.
